Top LD Cards

Note:  Players rated at LD are included here even if it is perhaps not their
primary position.

There is a healthy amount of solid LD cards in the upcoming 2009-2010.   The
Strat draft league strategy is to get as many top-two or top-four D cards as
possible (OFF-4 and OFF-3 ratings) with good scores for DEF and INT.   Of
course, the pass rating is also key as the D cards must have the ability to
feed the top scoring forwards.

There are 3 DEF-5 cards at the LD position.  Duncan Keith is probably the
top-rated player available at LD based on the DEF-5 and the even strength
shooting columns.   Keith along with Mike Green are probably the "must-have"
defenders at this point in time for draft leagues.  Chris Pronger has
another great card and it's amazing how he puts together the shooting
columns and secondary ratings given his age and all of the wear on his body.
Zdeno Chara once again represents a killer Strat force on the power play and
defensive end.   The Charo INT rating means he's the guy on the blue line
you want matched up against the opposition's top scorer.

Dan Hamhuis doesn't have a Strat history of big scoring cards but he's young
and has many years ahead of him for the draft league roster.   He's one of
the the big INT cards with the PEN-D ratings and that's a very worthwhile
commodity.   He can stop the opposition and he doesn't force you into a high
percentage of short-handed situations.   The OFF-3 rating makes him slightly
better than some of the other players at this position.

Marc-Andre Bergeron is one of the bigger PP cards at LD.  The guy has very
little game on the defensive end but he's going to score some goals on the
power play in draft leagues.  He may have put together even bigger numbers
if he didn't miss part of the season with injuries.  There are 6 other LD
possibilities with strong PP offerings including the amazing veteran Nicklas
Lindstrom and Dion Phaneuf.   The Phaneuf INT-12 rating will come in very
handy throughout the season and playoffs.

There are good value, bargain LD cards with the OFF-4 rating.  Brian Mccabe
is one of the better contemporary D with strong shooting columns and he does
enough on the defensive side not to turn into a liability in draft league
play. Joni Pitkanen doesn't look like he'll ever develop into a great Strat
D card but he's a solid mid-level player.

The good scoring LD cards with the OFF-3 rating are good targets for the
roster.  Lubomir Visnovsky is one of the better D cards in the set, perhaps
close to a top 10 player in terms of offense, and he's great on the inside
shooting columns in this set.  The defense, however, is lacking and that
means you will need to reinforce other spots on the team to compensate.
Tomas Kaberle of the Maple Leafs ranks as one of the better PP choices for
the position and he's a good selection if you miss out on the marquee names.
Keith Yandle also has good PP units and he's a DEF-4 card.   Unfortunately,
the lower INT rating will collapse his value in some of the smaller draft
leagues.

There is a very solid group of LD cards with DEF-4, PEN-C, and high INT
ratings.  Andy Sutton is a big, tough guy who blocks shots with the best of
them.  Keith Ballard is usually good for 30 points a season and it's a very
good depth card to have on the team.  Brooks Orpik also works well as a 5 or
6 D card on the draft league team.
